RACISM: Discuss or Ignore?
There are two prevailing views on Yuwie about how to deal with racism; discuss it or ignore it. In addition, there is also a third view, discuss the positive & not the negative.

Discuss it all:

Julia: I applaud you for getting people to discuss the elephant in the room.

Maureen: Self reflection and education, intolerance of injustice are key. And a whole lot of LOVE.

Ignore:

Jennifer: I'm from the USA and don't have those views...people should think before they post.... like the person said before shame on you.

Steve: Shame on you for posting shame on the USA.
Taking the actions of a few and attributing it to a whole country does not wise make you look.

Only focus on doing positive:

Anonymous: Everyone's focusing on "racism" instead of harmony. I'm not ignoring the problem. I'm looking at another way to resolve it. It begins with us individually and then collectively. Kind of like: Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me........

Live Love & Prosper \V/! My Dear people of planet Earth. racism is an oxymoron. There is only one race,...the human race. While we are all different,...we are all the same. Let us embrace our cultural differences,...and gain strength from the sharing.

I am not so sure htat we should be discussing racism as much as we should be discussing discrimination as it boils down to the same thind, but includes more issues. For instance if someone is denied something due to a disability it would not fall into racism, but it too could be considered discrimination. Let's not define issues according to race, there are issues that fall together and discrimination would cover them together without diminishing the importance of all of the issues.

Racism is just a part of discrimination in general, but with racism resulting from our presidential election, it seems that this is a good place to start. :)

When God flooded the earth, He wiped out all of mankind except Noah, his wife, his 3 sons, and their wives...so think...we are ALL decendants of those eight people! We are all genetically one!!!
Reply | 12/2/2008 9:27:35 PM
well you can even go back farther than that....according to the bible in the beggining God created Adam and Eve....so wouldnt we ALL have to be descendants of those TWO people???
Reply | 12/4/2008 7:42:36 AM
Actually I'm the Steve whose statement you refer to with your ignore option and my statement in no way implies that we should ignore racism.
I actually made another comment which explained this in rather simple terms that anyone should be able to comprehend.
Please correct your bog.
My vote would be to discuss it.
And yeah shame on you again for your other shame on the USA blog... isn't this the same USA that just elected a biracial president?

Steve

You saying shame on me for posting the blog, in simple terms that you can understand, is saying that the problem should be ignored. Otherwise you would not be against me for posting the blog in the first place.

Even in my family theirs a basic misunderstanding of exactly what is a race. Few countries on Earth can match the US on its need to categorize people...Asians who are 'purely' Asians, Asians who are mixed with another race, Whites who are 'purely' White, Whites who are mixed with another race, Indians (Native Americans don't mind Indian anymore) who are 'purely' Indianor Indians who are mixed with another race, Black Africans who are 'purely' Black or Blacks who are mixed with another race, Semites who are purely Semitic or Semites who are mixed with another race.

Most people living in Spain today are as much North African as they are European. They consider themselves White but in the United States they would be classed Hispanic.

Racism at its root is instinctive but it can be overcome with education. You can only teach someone to understand...and then they make the leap to love or hate.
Reply | 11/24/2008 10:53:51 AM
Hey people could somebody please tell me where did all this racism come from? Why does one hate another because of a difference in skin color? I know it's taught but why is it taught? What is lacking in the makeup of a person who would teach this? I ask this question because I don't have a racist bone in my body. I really don't. I hate no one. I don't understand hate and I'm glad that I don't. I only feel pity and sympathy for those who don't or won't love their fellow man. The gates of Heaven will be closed to haters that's for sure, because the number one commandment is to love one another, in that one commandment the Bible says, you have fulfilled all the commandments. Don't bother to debate me on the validity of the word of God. You won't win. Since the floodgates have been opened, what's up with the segregated churches? That doesn't even make any sense at all, because God's genuine people are one. God's looking for people with love in their hearts, I wonder will He find any?
Reply | 11/24/2008 12:48:05 AM
I really don't understand why either... Racism makes absolutely no sense...
Reply | 11/25/2008 2:29:56 PM
People in this country need to grow up. I beleive that the racial issue in this country gets less and less every year. Yes we will always have the haters amoung us. Are they not entitled to thier opnion. I thought that it was everybodies right to have one. the problem as I see it is learned. Unfortunatly and fortunatly we are products of our environment. As more and more parents teach social tolerance Racism has less of a chance to rear it's ugly head. It's time to get over it people!!!!!!!

CNN.com December 12, 2006
• Poll shows most Americans consider racism a problem
• Blacks more than twice as likely to call racism a 'very serious' problem
• Almost half of whites and blacks say they know someone who is racist
• Only a few of either race say they are racially biased themselves

52% of America voted for Obama while only 13% of America is Black.
That is not Racism.

However, 95% of African -Americans VOTED FOR Obama, no MATTER WHAT their political or religious affililiation was prior, whether they were liberal or conservative, pro-life or pro-choice. This was a departure from all previous elections.

Now perhaps that wasn't EXACTLY racism, BUT it was SOMETHING other than Dr.Martin Luther King's DREAM of looking at the content of a man's character other than the color of his skin.

And I also am offended that you would say 'Shame On The USA' for the actions of a few idiots. It is in the same category as blaming ALL Muslims for 9/11.

First of all, I think you should take a look at this blog:
http://ww9.yuwie.com/blog/entry.asp?id=500182&eid=521681

Secondly, it makes our entire country look bad when we have all these instances of hate crimes happening because of the results of the presidential election. Our country has not dealt with the problem of racism satisfactorily, or all of these hate crimes would not be happening.

Once again, thanks McSpocky for including one of my blogs in your related links listed above. I tend to look at this topic as comical and insane. I have to, or I will get angry:

President-Elect BARACK OBAMA-rama! [Editorial] [Yuwie Blog]

Of course, it's important to talk about and face the demons that has characterized the evil behavior of certain ethnic groups for thousands of years. You even have to look at it from an evil spiritual perspective just to make sense of it. Yet, some people are still in denial that they even have the problem.

That's why many of us African-Americans don't even bother to jump into this conversation because it's like trying to talk to a caveman or someone living in the Dark Ages. You're going to twist things no matter what we say just to make yourself feel comfortable. Misery loves company.

By the way, how many more centuries do you have to discuss this matter before you change yourselves? My calendar says that it's going on 2009 !!!!!
Reply | 11/23/2008 5:26:38 PM
To people who feel we should just ignore the conversation or focus on harmony instead of the problems we face:

Look, it's important to point out the realities of what is going on. The reality is that Obama was elected president during a time when there were very few African-American governors in the US. So, what has happened is really amazing.

At the same time, there is still a lot of racism left to overcome. It's important to recognize that we live in a divided country. Half of us will be celebrating Obama's inauguration in January, and there other people who will not.

It's okay to realize that yes we've come a long way and there is also a long way still to go. I won't rest peacefully until NeoNazis and hate crimes are gone. Focus on harmony, but, also keep reading the newspaper and listening to NPR to understand the realities of this country. We aren't there yet. I APLAUD you for posting, McSpock.

GO OBAMA!!!!

I have so much to say on the subject, being from Africa where 'Apartheid' reigned just 14 years ago. If America can't find a solution and set an example then I don't know if it will ever be resolved!
I urge everyone to have a look at the link my friend Enemy of Emp... has posted here it is worth watching as well as his blog, very insight full and it makes you think !
Reply | 11/23/2008 8:11:34 AM
Well....i think we should neither discuss it or ignore it....as for only discussing the positive...i cant think of anything positive about racism....but anyway...
You can discuss it from now till the end of time just like all those before us have discussed it....like walking on a treadmill it will wear you out but you wont get anywhere...
If you ignore it then it will grow and grow like a cancer...
But if a person IS racist chances are you will never change their mind.....just like they will never be able to change yours to their way of thinking right?? Instead each person should make sure they treat everyone with respect and care. People are more likely to learn by your example than a heated discussion!

My American brothers and sisters:
I think that the only way to resolve any issues
of mistrust ,ignorance and bigotry at any level is education and discussion; freedom of speech affords us this as it defines us as a free people.
I have learned from personal experience that basically people of all races are the product of their environment and the individual choices made within their given personal sphere of influences. ( culture) We need to use our heads and choose with our hearts, this has been done by the people of your great nation !
The presidential election in your country was a moral victory for all, and good or bad we should be proud of the leap in faith and dignity this has manifested. I think there is still a long way to go, in terms of equality for all people.
We all need to wake up to the fact that united we all stand and divided we will fail
God bless you all.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don't need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last till the end of time.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don't need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, lord, if you want to know.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

No, not just for some, oh, but just for everyone.

Ok let's start with what is racism. I think it is hatred or intolerance of another race or races stemming mostly from jealously. This in turn leads the racists to think they are superior and have the right to rule others. Would a person end up being a racist if they were not exposed to it in their growing up years? I doubt it very much. I have often wondered when, where, what, how and why this all started. I have come to the conclusion that when a group of people decided to war against an other people some leaders convinced his warriors that they were superior to who they were going to fight and conquer. If you make your fighters think the enemies are inferior, low lifes, and the scum of the Earth it will be much easier for your fighters to kill the people he is fighting against. Racism does not include religions or ethnic groups. Yes it should be discussed over and over. Which will help some, but there is too much resentment for racism to die. Now it is used as excuse. BTW, Black

By studying in a different country, I think I have a different perspective on some things now.

1. Different cultures seem to be much more assimilated in England than my experience in the US. My grandparent's generation in England had plenty of black/white couples and my parents generation had plenty of varied background couples. No one really seemed to care if they were half white, quarter Pakistani, quarter latino. I wonder what made this happen. Anyone have opinions on that?

2. I also had experience as a middle-class white girl as a minority. My behavior changed when people would critisize me for being American. I suddenly had to defend myself for something that was such a part of me and couldn't change:my culture. I think everyone should have the opportunity to experience that switch-up so that they can see the world in another's shoes.

I don't know what the solution is, but i'd love to hear opinions!

If Worldwide would Spend more time Teaching about God and less time reliving the past hate You Might not need This Discussion You Think ? So Why Has The Bible been Removed from our Schools ? And What Do You Think Might Happen if You Replaced it ?

Hmmm...not exactly sure what you are saying or what bibles in schools have to do with racism...but It sounds like you are saying (and i may be very wrong here) that all this racism stems from having the bible taken out of schools....IF that is what you meant then i feel that is wrong...religion was separated from schools back in the 1960s......BEFORE that it was allowed....DURRING that same time that the bible was removed from schools America was totally segregated.....black people had separate water fountains, separate restraunts, separate bathrooms, separate schools...and before that was even worse...well we ALL know what went on before that....
ALL of the civil rights black people have now that they didnt have then have come about since the bible was removed from schools...so how would putting bibles back in schools cure racism??
however...i still dont think the one thing has anything to do with the other....???
Reply | 11/23/2008 1:13:01 AM
Sorry Spocky...I KNOW this is NOT what this topic is about....but i got to thinking and had to come back and ask....
IF we were to put THE BIBLE back into the schools...tell me...which one would we put there?? The Catholic Bible? The Morman Bible? The Talmud?, the Koran?, the Ho;y Bible??
You see racism is about much more than color of skin...
and one of the very reasons our country took its independence from england was so that we could have freedom of religion....there are numerous different religions in america and to put one bible into schools would be a snub to all other religions....
I believe school is for learning math and science and grammer...and church is for learning religion....that way you can choose your church so you know what they are teaching your kids and when they go to school you dont have to worry that they are being taught some religion other than the one you believe in!!
Reply | 11/23/2008 1:23:04 AM
England is a very small country compared to the U.S.-many parts of america have greatly integrated cities and towns, with racially mixed couples. Other vast areas are not so. It depends on where you are talking about. As for being disliked for being an american-that seems to depend on foreign policy at the moment.
Reply | 11/23/2008 12:38:27 AM
The bible was removed from 'public schools'-because of the seperation clause in the constitution between church and state- Private schools can teach how they want-so long as teachers are credentialed. ONE good reason for the school voucher system. Though I know some bible toting bigots and racists.

But When You As A Parent Fail At your Job Of Teaching Children Right From Wrong And You Take the bible out of School And Let the Devil Control Your Child You Blame All Americans for your Lack of Teaching Right ?? You Will Never End Hate without God and you can Call it Racism if you Like . You Say you want change but still you raise children with the same relived hate of days gone by . So If God aint your answer please let me know when you have one . And my Dear Back When The Bible was in school you had alot less hate and children growing up like I Did to love and respect one another . As For What bible dear any child of God knows there is only one God so As long as you teach the truth whats The Problem?
Reply | 11/23/2008 2:38:40 AM

LOL I Love your Question but if You Dont know God is Love and the bible is his word to teach to small children not the hate that many teach from years ago . Have you ever seen A Child of God That is full of hate or Racism as you call it ? LMAO Not in this life time will you see one .. The Bottom line you teach your child the past hates and pains and you think you can ever cure Racism ? Please stop amusing me by a discussion you all will be having 30 years from now because you refuse to use the one and only cure for Racism ,Hate Or what ever you wish to call it.. Good Night ....LMAO Its been Fun to see who is teaching the Problems of today .
Reply | 11/23/2008 2:57:34 AM
Well first of all do you really believe that back in the 60s when the bible was in schools there was a LOT less hate??? I dont know how old you are but I was alive in the 60s...just barely...i was a kid but i WAS there and believe me there was HATE everywhere. Honestly I dont believe the bible being in or out of schools has anything to do with how much racism there is either way...i think bibles in schools is a whole nother subjet alltogether....but BY FAR there was wayyyyy more hate around durring the same time as bibles were in schools so going by that Id say having bibles in schools did not curb hate...nor do i think taking them out changed anything...i think we are comparing apples to oranges here...
Reply | 11/23/2008 9:44:25 AM
Secondly...I dont know what religion you subscribe to ..BUT I am sure that you believe in it with a passion....as does every other person on the planet...problem is there are many religions and many bibles...you say there is only one bible but that is not true.....there is only one that you believe in and therefore you only give credit to that one as being THE bible...I dont know all religions but for example i do know that catholics and baptists have a slightly different bible....they are close but not exactly, also i know Mormans have a differerent bible, as do christian scientists, and also muslums do, and so do Jews right?? So which one is THE bible??? well i guarantee each group will say theirs is...
And IF a parent fails to teach their child right from wrong that does NOT make it the schools responsibility....
Regardless of how we are raised we ALL have to find our own way in the world....

'Have you ever seen a 'child of god' that is full of hate?'

Plenty, where would you like me to start. Let's see, Jerry Falwell, Rev. Ian Paisley

Bringing it all into the open will improve relations among us IMO. Just look at what was reported on Thursday... One of our nation's most racist institutions apologizes. Bob Jones University has apologized for racist policies including a one-time ban on interracial dating that wasn't lifted until nine years ago and its unwillingness to admit black students until 1971.The private fundamentalist Christian school that was founded in 1927 said its rules on race were shaped by culture instead of the Bible, according to a statement posted Thursday on the university's Web site. The university in northwestern South Carolina, with about 5,000 students, didn't begin admitting black students until nearly 20 years after the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling found public segregated schools were unconstitutional.

That is awesome! If the negative hadn't been brought out, then the positive wouldn't have happened. That's an excellent example of why the good AND bad should be talked about.
